Quinto do Noval

Quinta do Noval is one of the oldest port houses and arguably one of the greatest, predating the the region’s demarcation in 1756. Mentioned in land registries as far back as 1715, it’s been sold just twice in that time, once in the late 19th century, and to its present owners, AXA Millésimes, in 1993. Noval is unique among top port shippers in that most of the ports are made from estate-grown fruit and, notably, all of the vintage wines come from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard. They were the first to introduce blended tawnies with an indication of age ie: 10, 20 year old etc., and launched the first late-bottled vintage port in 1958. In recent years, they’ve added a range of non-fortified wines made from the same local grape varieties but in a completely different style, which is not only a great way to discover Noval’s fantastic ports but also “the other” types of wines which are becoming increasingly popular from this part of Portugal.
