We’re highlighting a few producers who we feel are making outstanding examples from this noble variety, each made in their own individual style and delivering wines which punch way above their respective price points.
For those of you unfamiliar with the wines from Piedmont in northwest Italy, Nebbiolo is the grape that produces the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco—a hauntingly complex variety that can give wines of power and finesse with unrivaled aging potential. While Barolo and Barbaresco are aged for years in barrel before release, many growers also bottle a fresher, lighter, more approachable expression of the variety under the Langhe Nebbiolo denomination.
Luigi Pira
Luigi Pira’s employs a meticulous blend of modern and traditional vinification techniques to cultivate the varietal’s renowned complexity. The grapes are exclusively for the production of Langhe Nebbiolo as opposed to declassified fruit – a wine with expansive volume and breath, elegant fruit intensity, and sublimely expressive. A serious Barolo in disguise and for a fraction of the price.

Vietti
‘Forget baby Nebbiolo! This assertive wine from Vietti is a stylish Nebbiolo with a sleek nose and bracing palate. Bright ruby in the glass, it has telltale Nebbiolo aromas of rosehip and orange peel. Strawberry fruit is accompanied by firm, polished tannins, crisp acidity, and an amazing rhubarb savouriness that carries the finish. It comes from a selection of grapes grown in both Barolo and Barbaresco, mostly on the classic combination of limestone and clay. A wine that offers both immediate enjoyment and the potential for aging, showcasing the classic Nebbiolo profile in a more approachable format. A wine with a concentrated profile that does not disappoint.

Produttori del Barbaresco
Famed for their spectacular single-vineyard Barbarescos, Produttori del Barbaresco is perhaps the world’s most celebrated wine co-operative. Founded in 1956, it’s considered one of the most consistent and exceptional producers in the region, and can take a lot of credit for helping the Barbaresco appellation gain a reputation not far short of its neighbor Barolo. While these wines need several years of aging, it’s the Langhe Nebbiolo that’s the most accessible and approachable in its youth. Perfumed and precise, it’s lithe and delicately structured with a ripe core of red fruits, rose petal and spice, all elegantly framed by fine yet firm tannins and bright acidity.
