Garage Wine Co. is probably one of the most dynamic and individual wine producers working in Chile today. They make a range of wines from a series of individual parcels and small lots that include a series of dry-farmed field-blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre, País, Cinsault and Cab Franc (all of which can be found here) grown on pre-phylloxera rootstock by small farmers in the Maule and Maipo Valleys. Each wine is from a 1-2 hectare vineyard sourced in a different place, and over the years working in the community they have raised a posse of exceptionally experienced vineyard hands whose skills are working the vineyards the old, traditional way.
We’re highlighting their Cabernet Sauvignon this week from the tiny Reelegido vineyard in Maipo Valley just south of the capital Santiago and it’s a testament to the vineyard’s organic farming. Graceful tannins, a structured and full-bodied profile and a lengthy, nuanced finish, the wine brims with energy and vibrancy. A contemporary and alluring Chilean red.

Cabernet Sauvignon grafted onto old Pais rootstock in Maipo, dry-farmed and vinified naturally with native yeast. Dense blue and black fruit with a racy, fresh acidity that’s more Maule coastal than Maipo mainstream, showing tobacco, mineral and the kind of tension you rarely find in Chilean Cab. A real outlier.
